This charitable fund, set up by two ex-presidents, is collecting cash and in-kind donations. They plan to work with the governors of the affected states to coordinate short and long term relief efforts.

ModestNeeds.org is collecting donations to help families who take in people dislocated by Katrina. They will offer assistance with increased grocery bills, purchasing air beds, bedding and so forth. ModestNeeds has a strong track record of raising money for needs like this in the past.
